Is the future really better than the present? Will we be happier in future than we are now? Will we be wealthier in future than we are at present? Will we be more at peace with ourselves and our world in the future than we are right now? May be, may be not.
There are no guarantees on what the future will bring for us. Depending on the future to bring us the life and circumstances we dream about involves taking an enormous risk. How many of us have the stomach for a risk that may end in disaster? Some do and for them I will say, go ahead with my best wishes. I wish from my heart that you attain everything that you wish for in a future time and place.
Base in the present
But doesn’t every investment for or in the future have its base in the present? If you are a gambler and wish to leave everything to chance for your future happiness, then you will carry on with life without investment of any kind, now or in the future. But if you want a good, happy, wonderful future, you have to start planning for that in the here and now. The future may still not pan out the way you want it to but you can safeguard yourself against a few things.
Save money in instruments that will grow over time and ensure you the kind of life you want to lead in the future. Buy a house that you can live in easily – make provision for the fact that you will be that much older and maybe not as healthy as you are now. Look after your health today so that you are not plagued by sickness and ill-health in later years. Eat healthy. Exercise. Develop hobbies that you enjoy and which you can carry into your old age. Bring up your children such that they become your support in your twilight years.
Future may be catastrophic
But in spite of all these steps, the future may be catastrophic. Your investments could crash, your health might collapse, your children may not look after you, the world might erupt in a war, terrorism, natural and man-made disasters might bring an end to the world as you knew it. The future is so very very unpredictable. So why don’t you just live in the present?
Live for the moment. Live life to its fullest right now. Enjoy your life. Enjoy your family and friends. Enjoy your wealth. Enjoy your health. Enjoy the wondrous joys that nature gives us. Enjoy music and dance and theatre. Enjoy books. The list is never-ending.
Investing in the future is a nonsensical notion – the future does not exist, it is an illusion, a concept that may or may not reach fruition. It’s so much more sensible to live in the present – the present is yesterday’s future and what we have and are now are an outcome of what happened yesterday. So invest is the present and the future will take care of itself.
