We live in an ever changing world. In other words, change occurs continuously and this constant change is an expected condition. In the physical universe, and in life, not only is change constant, it is inevitable. If we look at the physical world we live on, we see that it is a planet that is in constant motion – it rotates on its axis and it revolves around the sun – both, continuously without respite. Nature changes constantly, the seasons change, all life forms change from birth to death. People are born, they grow up, work, marry, have children, grow old, retire and die. Life is a cycle of continuous change.
The concept of change being the only constant in life was first propounded by Heraclitus of Ephesus, a Greek philosopher sometime around 500 B.C. He stated that the doctrine of change was central to the universe. He further illustrated this point by saying “No man ever steps into the same river twice”, i.e. the river is the same but the water keeps flowing constantly so that from one second to the next it is really a different river. It is not the same anymore.
Affects each person differently
Change affects each person differently and each of us deals with change differently. Most of our daily changes are small and we learn to manage them. But sometimes big changes occur in our lives – some people handle them well, others fear and resist the change and thus find it difficult to cope. It could be a loss of livelihood, a break-up of a marriage or relationship, a death of a close one, an accident, children getting married and moving away – all these can bring unhappiness, unpleasantness, grief, violence or instability into their lives and they are fearful of the consequences of the change and of dealing with it. But being scared will not help in any way. It is necessary to cease being scared – change is disrupting and upsetting only when we resist it. Take it in your stride, don’t let it discourage you.
Change will happen, constantly and continuously
It is necessary to accept as gospel truth that change will happen, constantly and continuously. Some of them will be positive, some negative. We need to develop our own coping mechanisms to handle these changes. Our attitude towards life and towards change will go a long way in contributing to our dealing with the situation. A positive outlook and a willingness to look for the good in every situation no matter how bad it looks helps in managing difficult changes in your life. When big changes happen, it also does not hurt to ask for help – there are enough and more people out there who will lend a helping hand in times of trouble. So forget your ego and seek help. These are the same people who will be around to celebrate the good changes in your life. Include them in your life.
Change causes discomfort no doubt but change also brings new things into your life. It brings freshness and new challenges. It keeps you moving forward. It brings you happiness and it brings you difficulties which serve to make you stronger and better. Embrace the changes and make them work for you in the best way possible.
