Millennials are the new workforce, the new generation of workers who will form the larger proportion of the working population in a few years time. So if you want your organization to grow and be successful, you need to understand the millennials, communicate with them, support them and motivate them to give of their best to your company. Collaborating and working with this group will help you deal with the future of work in an efficient and cohesive manner.
Look at the changes that have been brought about by technology in the recent past – instant communication across the globe, shared economies, virtual workplaces, virtual meetings, work from home on computers to name a few.
Advances in technology
The advances in technology are accelerating with each new day – we don’t know what further changes will be wrought in the world – business or otherwise – in the future. But, if we wish to ride into the future of work successfully, we have to think about how to mentor tomorrow’s workforce – in other words, the millennials – so that they can be productive and can guide the company to victory in the future in their role as leaders and heads of organizations.
You have to invest in their todays because your efforts will influence, guide, train them to perform successfully tomorrow.
Think differently, work differently
Millennials think differently, they work differently, they like to stay connected. They are a thinking lot of people. They value independence – they do not like somebody micromanaging their work. They do not see the need to come into a physical office – they are just as happy working out of their home or at a café or even when traveling.
They do not have any respect for traditional hierarchical company structures – they evaluate people based on their intrinsic characteristics, not on their position or their status. They believe in flat organizational structures where they are on par with everyone – there is no authoritarian boss around to coerce them into toe the line.
Superiors who are supportive
They prefer superiors who are supportive, encouraging and empathetic. They do not react well to orders and instructions from seniors – they favor a more inclusive form of organizational structure where they take part in the decision making process, as equals. They are an integral part of organizations now and will be more so in the future of work.
As a result they cannot be ignored by their employers. Their creativity and innovations have to be recognized and appreciated, their views and ideas taken into consideration, their need for connectivity yet their desire to work offsite honored and implemented, their attitude and opinions understood. Their needs, desires, aspirations have to be recognized and understood because they are the future drivers of the organization. Thus they have to be mentored and guided correctly so that they contribute positively in the future. With their partiality for independence and autonomy, it is very easy for them to go off track and totally derail the growth of the organization.
They have to be groomed to take on the mantle of organizational heads and leaders in the not too distant future and that is where current leaders need to step in to ensure that they are capable of taking on the charge of leading the organization in the future.
